How does acupuncture work??

Acupuncture involves inserting extremely fine needles into carefully selected points on the body. These points are chosen according to your symptoms, medical history and the overall pattern identified during your consultation.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture points lie in energetic pathways on the body. These pathways are understood to carry Qi, the bodies vital energy. When this flow becomes disrupted or imbalanced, it is traditionally believed to contribute to pain, dysfunction or ill health. Acupuncture aims to stimulate specific points to help restore balance and support the body’s natural capacity for healing.

From a modern physiological perspective, inserting and gently stimulating an acupuncture needle creates a small but measurable stimulus in the tissues. This activates sensory nerve fibres and sends signals through the peripheral nervous system to the spinal cord and brain.

Research suggests acupuncture can influence several processes involved in pain regulation, including the body’s own pain-modulating system and signalling chemicals. Local needling may also produce changes in the surrounding connect tissue, muscle and circulation. The precise mechanisms are complex, and researchers do not yet have one single explanation for all of acupunctures effects.

In simple terms: The needle provides the stimulus and your body provides the response.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is generally considered a safe treatment when carried out by a properly trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. The needles are extremely fine and treatment is usually very gentle. Most people find acupuncture comfortable and many find the experience deeply relaxing. Occasionally, you may notice a little tenderness or bruising afterwards, but this is usually mild and short-lived. Research and safety guidance support acupuncture as having a good safety record when performed appropriately (NCCIH, 2024).

At True Point Acupuncture, your comfort and wellbeing are always a priority. Before we begin, we’ll take time to discuss your health, medical history and any medications you are taking so your treatment can be individually tailored to you. You’ll also have plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and treatment will always progress at a pace you feel comfortable with. The aim is for you to feel informed, relaxed and in safe hands throughout your acupuncture experience.
